ISLAMABAD: Pakistan cricket team’s former captain Shahid Afridi has decided to take part in the inaugural Over-40 World Cup.
The tournament was originally set to take place in Pakistan but has been moved to Cape Town South Africa by the organisers The International Masters Cricket (IMC) committee. It is scheduled to take place from the 4th to the 18th of March 2024.
Eight teams will reportedly take part in the competition with Australia, West Indies, Canada, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, UAE and the US joining Pakistan.
Afridi, whose career spanned two decades from 1996 to 2016, reportedly agreed to be part of the Pakistan squad after meeting with Pakistan Veterans Cricket Association (PVCA) chairman Fawad Ijaz Khan.
The former all-rounder has kept himself busy since retiring from the sport, taking part in exhibition matches around the globe for various promotions as well as running his own charity foundation.
He recently had a brief stint as Pakistan’s Chief Selector of the men’s cricket team as well.
Shahid Afridi will be joined by former captains Misbah-ul-Haq, who himself is still taking part in cricketing leagues, and Younis Khan for the first Over-40 World Cup.
The last time he donned a playing kit, Afridi led Asia Lions to the Legends League Cricket trophy.
