Today, United Nations aid agencies say more than 22 million Afghans, including millions of children, are facing severe food shortages. It is estimated that by 2021 there will be more than 5.5 million internally displaced persons (IDPs), including more than 680,000 newly displaced by the conflict. In 2021, this is in addition to the 1.1 million Afghans returning from Iran and Pakistan. The United Nations has said the country is undermining the fundamental rights of women and girls under the Taliban, strengthening its call for a more inclusive government in Afghanistan.
