Drug addiction is such an ailment which is rapidly increasing. Every street owns a drug addicted person. Drug addiction has now become a fashion for everyone. There was a time when only illiterate and ignorant people were the prey of drugs but today every second or third person is in the griff of drug addiction. Besides this, educated people are also using drugs_ particularly, young ones. Drug addiction pushes a man to death. It makes man fugitive and compels him to be irresponsible citizen. Because, when someone uses drugs, he never realizes his responsibilities and duties which he has to perform for the melioration of him and his society. He always tries to run away from the difficulties. His life becomes aimless. A time comes when drugs become the reason of his death_ a very cheap death which means nothing to others. Moreover, drug addiction provokes to many other calamities which which weaken a nation. Likely, whenever a drug addict does not get money to buy drugs so he starts stealing and cheating others in order to fullfil his notorious desires. He oppresses his family members to bring money or drugs for him anyhow. Seeing no option of earring, his family members beg and bring him drugs. Apart from it, drug addicts spoil the lives of their kids by taking them out of school and sending them for jobs and earning money in order that the drug addicts may get drugs. This leaves a bad impact on the children of drug addicts. They can never dream for a better life due to their drug addicted fathesr. No matter that the illiterates go for drugs but it astonishes us when we find out educated tribe, students, using drugs. Most of the times, students from universities are found using cigarettes, quids or snuffs, beers and sometimes wine and such intoxications. This, they think, is a fashion and a source of amusement. According to them, these are not drugs. But, they do know that these contain the same substances which narcotics contain. When they grow up so the same little drugs make them drug addicted. Drug addiction also deprives a man of his talent. I remember there was a good singer in our locality. He used to sing as well as play harmonium but whence he started using drugs; he lost his voice and talent. Now, he picks up plastic bottles from the heap of garbage and sales them and geys some drugs from that money. Sometimes when I see him I really feel compassion for him. There are many such examples. According to a report, Pakistan has 7.6 million drug addicts out of which 78% are males and 22% are females. This figure puzzled me when I, for the first time, knew that females are also drug addicted and in a huge number. Additionally, drug addicts are increasing at the rate of 40,000 yearly. The increasing number of drug addicts is making Pakistan one of the drug affected states in the world. It is really hard to curb on drug addiction and lower the number of drug addicts but the government and authorities concerned should burn the midnight oil to make it possible. There should be more rehabilitation centers and drug addicts should brought there for recovery. The family members of drug addicts should also try to help the affected person to control the excessive use of drugs. More importantly, the educated ones should run campaigns against drug addiction and spread awareness on drug addiction. Anti-narcotics and police should arrest the drug smugglers and do whatever is possible for the eradication of drug addiction. Everyone should play their role to control drug addiction and make a powerful and strong Pakistan. Let’s commit this commitment that from today we will play our role in making Pakistan a drug free state. Say not to drugs!
