Islamabad : Senate Standing Committee on Aviation on Tuesday revealed that out of a total 1,800 PIA employees the degrees of 1,200 were bogus.
It was also told that seven officers were hired on verbal orders and their salaries are being paid through another ministry. The committee also observed that the PIA staff mostly found involved in thefts incidents during PIA flights in inquiries.
The committee meeting was held under the chair of Chairman Mushahid Hussain Syed at Parliament House on Tuesday. The committee was informed that the name of Club Class for London is being changed.
The committee expressed strong reservations against opening of FIA office in the building of the PIA Headquarters. The committee directed report on patches in the Islamabad International Airport building next week. The committee also formed a sub-committee under Hasil Bazenjo to initiate inquiry.
The committee chairman said theft incidents are common during PIA flights, adding that one agency officials were also found involved in the theft incidents. He said delay in availability of luggage is a common observation, especially of Club Class passengers’ luggage.
He said the airport building is about to collapse and the people involved in embezzlement should be held accountable. Mushahid Hussain said there should be care while firing PIA employees, adding jobs are for providing opportunities not for unemployment. He, however, said those who didn’t provide their degrees from verification should be punished.
The chairman said the degrees of employees should be verified at the time of hiring and I had been not done so the responsible should be punished also.
PIA CEO informed the committee meeting that due to delay in checking on the part of FIA caused delay in deliver of luggage to the passengers. There were no such complaints at Lahore and Karachi airports.
