Sargodha: Mohammed Altaf Khan,the Lord Mayor of Oxford, England, will attend the 5th Convocation of University of Sargodha on Wednesday, 29th March, where the Chancellor and Governor Punjab, Mr Muhammad Rafique Rajwana will be the chief guest.
Born in Mirpur, AJK, and elected several times as city Councillor since 2005, Mr Altaf Khan is a pride of Pakistan like Mr Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, whose parents also hail from Pakistan.
On the occasion, Mr Altaf Khan will present a shield and letter of appreciation to Vice Chancellor Dr Ishtiaq Ahmad for his contribution to projecting Pakistan’s image and mentoring British Pakistani students during his tenure as Quaid-i-Azam Fellow at Oxford University from 2010 to 2015.
The Lord Mayor of Oxford is the first Citizen of the City of Oxford. The first recorded Mayor of Oxford is Turchillus, 1122-1123, and mayors’ names stretch in an unbroken line until 1962 when the dignity of Lord Mayor was granted to Oxford by Queen Elizabeth ll.
Mr Altaf Khan, a Liberal Democrat, was elected as Lord Mayor of Oxford in May last year. He came to the UK in late 1980s to join his family, who had settled in Oxford in the 1960s. He has been elected several times since 2005 as Councillor of Oxford city’s post locality, Headington. As Lord Mayor, he has given top priority to education, nominating education-focused charities to fundraise during his one-year term.
University of Sargodha’s graduates, faculty and staff are excited to have among them such a great personality. The Lord Mayor will receive a shield from the Governor of Punjab in recognition of his political success and community service.
