Srinagar: In occupied Kashmir, a class 10 student, Maysar, is the latest victim of pellets, whose both eyes have been badly damaged by the lethal metallic balls fired by Indian troops from shotguns at Nowgam in Srinagar.
According to Kashmir Media Service, wails and sobs filled the Ward No. 8 of the SMHS Hospital as Maysar, a resident of Lasjan, struggled to recognise family members, friends and relatives.
Moaning, the young boy repeatedly asked: “What has happened to my eyes? Will I be able to see again?” His young sister couldn’t bear Maysar’s helplessness and broke down.
According to his uncle Bashir Ahmad, Mayasar had gone to her aunt’s house in Nowgam, where people had been protesting against braid chopping incidents.
“They fired pellets at him directly. Please do write this,” Ahmad said, his eyes welled up. “Look what they have done to our son.” A doctor who attended to Maysar said he has had suffered severe eye injuries in both eyes. “His left eye is really bad. A pellet is lodged at his optic nerve. This has a very bad prognosis for him,” the doctor said.
The pellets have bruised the face and eyes of Maysar. His relatives, mostly women, who had gathered around his bed, were all in tears, trying to console each other. “The blood has dried up in his eyes and that is why he is not able to see at present,” Maysar’s sister said.
The relatives of the victims were aghast at civil society’s silence over the relentless blinding caused by pellet guns.
“We have been treating these pellet victims for more than a year now. These victims and their families are left to fend for themselves,” said a senior doctor.
