ISLAMABAD: Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Muhammad Yousaf has said that Ulema and Mashaikh Councils (UMCs) will be set up in all provinces, Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan to promote unity, solidarity and harmony in the society.

He was addressing a meeting of National Ulema and Mashaikh Council organized by the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Islamabad on Tuesday.

He said the National Council of Ulema and Mashaikh will be given constitutional cover and work has been started in this regard.

The Minister said that the scope of the Ulema councils will be expanded to the district and tehsil levels in order to collectively address all the issues.

National Security Adviser Nasser Khan Janjua gave a detailed briefing to the meeting on overall national security situation.

He urged the religious scholars to get united for the sake of national security. He said the establishment of Ulema and Mashaikh Councils at tehsil levels will help implement the points of National Action Plan relating to the religion.

He pointed out that three point five million students are enrolled in thirty-eight thousand seminaries across the country.

The National Security Advisor said the federal and provincial governments will be responsible to fund the seminaries.

Nasser Khan Janjua said that Islamic universities will be established in all provinces.

The meeting approved a code of conduct to ensure peaceful environment during Ashura Muharram.
