US President Donald Trump issued a revised and a relatively softer executive order banning entry of new visa seekers from six Muslim countries.The major difference between the latest executive order and the previous one is exclusion of Iraq from a list of countries who’s citizens would not make it to US.The order also suspends arrival of new refugees for 120 days while imposing a cap of 50,000 refugees for this year. Previously US had been allowing 110,000 refugees a year under Obama administration.Under the revised order which has been drafted after Trump lost a legal battle over the last order, citizens of six-targeted countries holding a valid visa can enter the United States.Dual nationals with foreign passports, green card holders, diplomats, legal permanent residents of the United States and those who have been granted asylum or refugee status are also exempted from the ban.Donald Trump who is in second month of his presidency has realised the importance of consultation and so this time, legislators were apprised of the order before it came into force.According to the fact sheet provided to lawmakers, the Department of Homeland Security will conduct a country-by-country review of the information the six targeted nations provide to the US for visa and immigration decisions. Those countries will then have 50 days to comply with US government requests to update or improve that information. Local media reported that the White House dropped Iraq from the list of targeted countries following pressure from the Pentagon and State Department, which had urged the White House to reconsider, given Iraq’s pivotal role in fighting the Islamic State group. Syrian nationals are also no longer subjected to an indefinite ban. Trump’s tussle with judiciary began after a Seattle Judge put a halt to the earlier travel ban order issued on January 27. Trump administration challenged the decision and argued that the ban was justified taking the plea of protecting US as part of his ‘Make America great again’ policy. However, a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals hurled a barrage of questions at a government lawyer inquiring whether the Trump administration’s national security argument was bolstered by evidence that people from the seven countries posed a danger to US.The new order, which the White House said Trump had signed, will keep a 90-day ban on travel to the US by citizens of six Muslim-majority nations – Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. The new directive delays implementation to limit the disruption that created havoc for some travellers when Trump issued his original order. Trump had said the restrictive order is necessary to ensure domestic security.New executive order will once again lead to public disapproval. It might, again, bring Trump administration directly in conflict with the US judiciary. Most importantly, Trump’s Muslim ban is not making America any safer. It will fuel new prejudices against America in the Muslim world. The Muslim ban is a direct attack on America’s liberal democracy and its ethos as a land of migrants. America has progressed over the centuries through the talents and innovations of the immigrants. Such steps are also not in the interest of the United States and must be reviewed.
