LAHORE : Chinese government has opposed proposal of the United States in Security Council of United Nations Organisation to declare chief of Jaish-e-Mohammad, Masood Azhar a global terrorist.
The proposal was finalised by the US and India but Beijing’s opposition has put the proposal on hold for six months which can extend by another three months while can be blocked anytime in the meanwhile.
It should be mentioned here that Jaish-e-Mohammad was earlier banned by the 15-member Security Council but Azhar was not banned.
However, proposal of the US seeking ban on Azhar has the support of Britain and France.
Reacting to the development, Indian foreign minister said that the issue has been raised with Chinese government.
Earlier on Tuesday, Pakistan contested in the United Nations that providing India among other countries with permanent seats in Security Council would be against democratic norm.
Maleeha Lodhi, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the United Nations opposed bids of India, Brazil, Germany and Japan.
JeM chief was accused in January last year of orchestrating an attack on Pathankot airbase in Punjab province of India which came days after Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi paid a surprise visit to Pakistani counterpart, Nawaz Sharif on his birthday.
Indian authorities alleged the organisation of carrying out the attack but no evidence was provided.
Security officials detained JeM chief for interrogation but he was freed as Indian government failed to put forth a substantial evidence.
