Islamabad (PR): STEM Careers Programme, a joint venture of Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Pakistan Institute of Engineering & Applied Sciences (PIEAS) for grooming talented students for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), will conduct Screening Test onFebruary 26, 2017 for selection of national teams to participate in International Science Olympiads. The nation-wide screening test for the Olympiads in Iran, Portugal, Romania, and Slovakia will be held in nine major cities of the country including Karachi, Quetta, Hyderabad, Multan, Sukkur, Faisalabad, Lahore, Peshawar and Islamabad. More than 4000 students will appear in the test at the mentioned centres. Every year, STEM organises a National Science Talent Contest (NSTC) whereby teams of highly talented students are selected and groomed for participation in International Science Olympiads in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. These International Science Olympiads are prestigious annual events that provide young science students from all over the world with an opportunity to learn by competing for solution to very challenging theoretical and experimental problems. The teams selected and trained by STEM Careers Programme have so far represented Pakistan in USA, Russia, UK, Germany, Turkey, Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea, Spain, Mexico, Singapore, Argentina, Slovenia, Iran, Canada, Vietnam, India, Hungary, Japan, Croatia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Netherland, Estonia, Denmark, Switzerland, South Africa, Columbia, Georgia and Hong Kong. These teams have altogether won four silver medals, 40 eight bronze medals and 42 honorable mentions. The process of selection of these students commences in November each year with posting an announcement on STEM Careers Programme website, publishing advertisement in major national dailies and sending introductory packages to about 7000 colleges throughout the country, followed by a nationwide screening test.
