Srinagar: In occupied Kashmir, a 40- year-old man, Javed Ahmed Malik was killed by Indian police in custody in Chatroo area of Kishtwar District.
Javed Ahmed Malik son of Mohammad Khalil Malik, who was a resident of Baharat, Doda, was murdered at Chatroo police station in the district on Friday. His killing is second death in police custody in less than one week period.
Speaking to the media in Kishtwar, Mohammad Abdullah Bhanday, the relative of the victim said that the deceased had gone to Chatroo police station for obtaining police report on bail application of some of his known persons arrested by the Police in a bovine smuggling case.
He informed that instead of filing a report as per the court directions, the police illegally detained Javed Ahmed Malik after he refused to pay graft of Rs 5000.
He said that despite repeated requests to the police station, they did not release Javed and in the afternoon on Friday they came to know about his death in custody.
“This is simply a murder—a custodial killing—we only want registration of FIR against SHO, Munishi of Police Station Chatroo Kishtiwar and other guilty persons” said Abdullah Bhanday. He said that SP Kishtwar is patronizing the guilty police officials by presenting a concocted story which is far from the truth.
Immam Jamia Masjid Kishtwar who also reached the spot termed the death of Javed Ahmed Malik as a cold blooded murder and sought justice for the deceased.
Meanwhile, the custodial death of Javed Ahmed Malik triggered protest in Chatroo tehsil of Kishtwar district. Protestors placed the dead body of the deceased at Chatroo bus stand demanding arrest of the policemen involved in the gruesome murder of the father of two children. The angry protestors blocked the road for hours. The protestors were raising slogans against the police and administration. Protesters rejected the police version that the deceased was involved in bovine smuggling. They said that police were unnecessarily harassing people.
