Islamabad: The Senate on Monday expressed serious concerns on recent spate of attacks on political parties in the run up to Elections 2018. It urged the Election Commission of Pakistan, federal and provincial caretaker governments to take steps for the protection of political parties.
The House passed a unanimous resolution on the tragic and horrific terrorist attack in Mastung area of Balochistan which resulted in the martyrdom of Mir Siraj Raisani, head of Balochistan Awami Party, and 149 innocent Pakistanis. Raisani was a brave and sincere Pakistani and the loss of his life is unfortunate.
The resolution was tabled by Leader of the Opposition Senator Sherry Rehman on behalf of others. Most of the senators expressed anger over the performance of caretaker government and NACTA and declared their performance disappointed.
The House also offered fateha for the departed souls of innocent people who were martyred in Mastung tragedy. The House put the routine agenda in abeyance in respect of those martyred.
Rising on a condolence reference with regard to Mastung tragedy, Senator Mian Raza Rabbani of Pakistan Peoples Party said it is caretaker government’s job to not only hold free, fair and transparent elections but also provide security to political parties, candidates and political workers.
He said the lives of the leaders of six major political parties are directly in threat. He said this will create political instability and mayhem in the country. Raza Rabbani said the preferences of caretaker government are weak and instead of resolving the genuine issues faced by public, it seems more interested in arresting the political workers.
Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif of MQM-P party said our society has become hypocritical and no serious effort is made for resolution of problems. We must have a strong introspection in order to lift our national spirits and character.
Senator Pervaiz Rashid of PML-N said the state has failed in its responsibility of providing security to citizens as part of its social contract with the citizenry. On the other hand, citizens are playing their part in this contract very sincerely. Pervaiz Rashid said the state’s priorities and citizens’ interests lack harmony. He said 16,000 political workers of his party were arrested in recent days.
Senator Shibli Faraz of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf said absence of good governance and accountability has led the country to decline. He said civilian law enforcement agencies need to be strengthened in order to stop such heinous acts.
Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan of Jamaat-e-Islami said Mir Raisani was a loyal citizen to Pakistan who has become a symbol of love for Pakistan who sacrificed his life for the soil of the country.
