Karachi: Supreme Court Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar on Thursday expressed resentment over continued water crisis in Karachi.
However, the chief justice expressed satisfaction over the performance of the Sindh Water Commission and directed it to submit monthly performance report in the Supreme Court.
The court will itself monitor the prevailing water situation in Sindh, the top court judge remarked.
The apex court also expressed resentment over pathetic condition of Sea sites, adding that the sea sites seem like garbage dump sites in Karachi.
The chief justice, during the hearing, remarked the water supply to the residents of Karachi will be ensured, adding that ëtanker mafiaí will have no place there.
The chief justice remarked during hearing of the case pertaining to water shortage in Sindh at the Karachi registry on Thursday.
The secretary Water informed the court that over 300 million gallons water was being supplied to Karachi from Manchar Lake. Responding to the secretary, the chief justice remarked there was Rs14.5 billion funds available for the development of water system but it seems that not a single penny was spent on water projects.
The condition of Manchar Lake is more pathetic as heap of garbage and other encroachment could be seen everywhere.
He remarked that as many 450 million gallons sewerage water was entering into the sea and no measures were taken to stop entry of that dirty water into the sea.
The chief justice asked what efforts the provincial government made in this regard, adding that the court wants to know. The chief justice further remarked that the court will itself monitor the water situation in Karachi.
He reaffirmed that the supply of clean water to the people of Karachi will be ensured.
