Islamabad : Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Sartaj Aziz on Thursday said the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) is one of the important platform to ensure proper coordination and cooperation among the members of the organization and will be helpful in promoting trade and economic ties in the region.
He was addressing the concluding session of the 82 Regional Planning Council meeting which was held here on Thursday.
He said the Islamabad Declaration issued following the conclusion of the meeting, is very important document and it will play pivotal role in promoting trade among the member states of the ECO.
Sartaj Aziz said new avenues of cooperation and coordination among the member states of the ECO were discussed during the meeting of the Regional Planning Council and expressed the hope that all the member states will extend their full cooperation for achieving the targets of progress and prosperity.
He said besides using the rail, road, ports the member states should look into the aspects of using modern technology and cyber contacts to further promote the trade and economic activities in the region.
Deputy Chairman Planning Commission said using the modern technology, the trade in the region of ECO could be doubled within just two to three years. He said in the 13th ECO summit regional peace and progress remained the important subjects which are the most important elements in the present circumstances.
He said all the member states have to join hands and share their experiences for the solution of the problems being faced to the region and it is the collective responsibility of all the members of the ECO.
He said ECO is the most important platform to unite the South Asian region with the West which is vital for promoting trade activities.
Secretary General ECO Halil Ibrahim speaking on the occasion thanked Pakistan for hosting the Regional Planning Council meeting. He said the meeting remained very successful as it discussed all the aspects to further promote trade links between the member states and also exchanged views on the vision of ECO summit for 2025.
