Islamabad : Vice Chancellor Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) Prof Dr Shahid Siddiqui has stated that university is doing every possible measure for the promotion of research culture and to facilitate the researchers.
He said this, while addressing the inaugural ceremony of a botanical garden located at the main campus of university and termed it a new feather in the cap of university
“The prime objective of establishment of botanical garden is the promotion of gardening and horticulture sector”, he added and maintained that having a wide range of plants, it will augment beauty and research environment of the University.
While highlighting the significance of the newly established botanical garden, he said that the Botanical garden, to work as open lab will have documented collections of living plants for the purposes of scientific research, conservation, display and education.
He added that it comprises a greenhouse as well that has been named as Gulzar House, dedicated to a gardener Gulzar Ahmed who had lost his life while doing his normal work, in wake of honey-bee attack May this year.
Dr. Shahid Siddiqui termed the garden as value-added addition of the prevailing research facilities in the University. “We will maintain its quality to get the best results, he added. He appreciated garden’s supervisor Abdul Sattar and his colleagues for their hard work in developing a deserted land in a befitting shape.
Fozia Anjum, incharge, Horticulture department of AIOU said that the garden carries 3,000 flower including fruit and vegetable plants of 120 varieties.
Earlier, Dean Sciences Dr. Naghama Rashid spoke about the academic achievements of the University in the recent years, particularly in the research sector and lauded the visionary approach of the VC in making the AIOU,a most vibrant educational institution of the country.
