Islamabad: (Parliament Times) For the first time in Pakistan, Islamabad Diagnostic Centre (Pvt) Ltd has introduced Liver Iron Quantification MRI Exam with the state-of-the-art powerful GE Signa Explorer machine offering a simple & non-invasive key indicator in the management of patients with Hemochromatosis & Thalasemia.

Going by its motto ‘precise & accurate diagnosis is key to
timely treatment’, Islamabad Diagnostic Centre (Pvt) Ltd is always on the
forefront to introduce new diagnostic technologies in Pakistan.

The challenge for medical professionals in Pakistan when dealing with human nutrition is the deficiency of iron rather than iron overload. Iron is needed by all cells in the human body, particularly cells producing hemoglobin. However, excessive iron accumulation promotes the formation of toxins that can damage organs. Normally, about 1–2 mg of dietary iron is absorbed daily. Approximately 80% of total body iron is functional, located in hemoglobin, muscle and iron-containing enzymes, and the remaining 20% is largely found in storage form inside the storage protein ferritin which acts as a depot.

Excess delivery
of iron into the body can occur due to two primary mechanisms: 1) increased
intestinal absorption, and 2) blood transfusions. Both mechanisms can result
from diseases like Thalasemia, Hemochromatosis, or iron intake etc.

“Iron is
a blessing for life but serious curse if over loaded”

Biopsies are
usually conducted by doctors to measure iron tissue which is an invasive
procedure. But gold standard non invasive test for measuring Liver Iron
Concentration is MRI using special technique known as T2 STAR. It is as
accurate as Liver Biopsy and has replaced that almost in most of the places. The
MRI Iron Quantification Test at IDC uses non-ionizing radiation for patient
safety and provides sharp HD images with volumetric 3D rendition of the organ
to help doctors make informed diagnosis.
