Islamabad: Indus Water Commissioner admitted before the Senate standing committee on Water resources that India was continually violating the Indus Water Treaty.
The committee meeting was held under the supervision of its chairman Senator Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan Nasir on Monday.
Meeting informed that India was constructing a number of run-of-the-river hydroelectric plants on the western rivers. Commissioner said that currently India was watering nearly 140000 hector area that was violation of the accord.
Meeting members detail reviewed the measures taken against the Indian violations of Indus water treaty and constructing a number of run-of-the-river hydroelectric plants on the western rivers.
During the meeting the joint secretary water resources told committee that on the order of Prime Minister the ministry of water and power was separated. Now the WAPDA was included in ministry of petroleum’ he stated. Currently, WADPA was looking after the country top water reservoirs and deal with hydel Power.
Indus River System Authority (IRSA) was looking the matters of water distribution among the provinces under the 1991 accord.

However, meeting also informed that pondage much higher than it is permissible, lower intakes and deep orifice spillways, the usual features of Indian designs, provide to India excessive control, which is against the explicit provisions of the treaty. Pakistan had raised number of objections in past over designs of Indian dams.
Using pondage higher than it is permissible under the treaty is in Indian benefit, but damages Pakistan, adding New Delhi is violating the provisions of the treaty.
