ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is investigating 36 people for posting anti-state content on social media.

FIA officials said on Sunday 22 people suspected of publishing hate material are in custody, and include activists of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

It was in this regard that PTI leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi visited the FIA Headquarters on Sunday to inquire into condition of their activists. Talking to the media after the meeting, he said “We stand by our [detained] activists and their families. They have not been nominated in any FIR specifically.” He added that freedom of expression and democracy go hand-in-hand.

In a tweet on Sunday, PTI MNA from Islamabad Asad Umar said the party will be holding a protest against the ‘harassment of social media activists’ in front of the Islamabad Press Club at 5pm on Monday.
Earlier, during a rally in Quetta on Friday, PTI chief Imran Khan warned the federal government not to restrict curbs on the media and social media.
