Muzaffarabad: The 33rd Martyrdom anniversary of prominent Kashmiri freedom leader Muhammad Maqbool Butt was observed on Saturday.
Muhammad Maqbool Butt was hanged on 11th February 1984 in Tihar Jail of New Delhi and was buried within the premises of the jail. Functions and rallies were held to pay homage to the services of Maqbool Butt Shaheed for Kashmir liberation struggle.
In Muzaffarabad and other cities of the, Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) and its students wing Kashmir Liberation Student Federation and other nationalist organizations took out processions, rallies and held public meetings to pay homage to great freedom fighters who had laid down his life for independence of Kashmir. The speakers called upon the UN secretary-general to intervene in the catastrophic situation in Kashmir to ensure the sanctity of the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, thereby providing the Kashmiri people their incontrovertible and unfettered right to self-determination as pledged to them in August 1948.
The Kashmir Liberation Students Federation held a public meeting at Upper Adda in collaboration with other nationalist groups, including the National Liberation Front. Speakers at the public meeting, which continued for several hours, said Shaheed Maqbool Butt had struggled throughout his life to see Kashmir as an independent state. The Kashmiris wanted to fulfill his dream at all costs, they said, asking India and Pakistan to quit the region to let them live as a free nation according to their own free will.
