LAHORE : The biggest freight operation of Pakistan Railways’ (PR) history begins today that will transport coal for the Sahiwal Coal Power Plant.

According to a press release issued by the Railway Headquarters, Lahore, Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique will receive the coal-packed train at the Sahiwal Coal Power Plant and a formal inauguration ceremony will be held.

Khawaja Saad Rafique has congratulated the team of Pakistan Railways on beginning a new chapter in the history of PR. The minister told that the revenue of Railways being generated from cargo services is ten billion rupees at the moment, and it will be doubled after this freight operation.

Saad Rafique said that this project will add more than 13 billion rupees annually in the treasure. He also told that a Chinese company has already paid fare of one month which is more than one billion rupees.

Railways CEO Javed Anwar also declared this a historic day for PR and told 25 engines will be used to supply coal having 4,000-horsepower. He said this will be the first time in Railways’ history that such powerful American made engines will be used for a freight operation.

He further told that latest hopper wagons will be used for the transportation of coal and each wagon possesses the capacity to load 70 tons of coal at a time.

A demonstration will also be performed in front of Shehbaz Sharif and Khawaja Saad Rafique to unload the wagon in just 30 seconds.
