Islamabad: Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) has granted bail in four cases against Pakistan-Tehreek-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan including attack on the state television building, Parliament and the then Islamabad SSP Operations Asmatullah Junejo.
The decision was reserved by ATC judge Sharukh Arjumand after Imran’s legal counsel Babar Awan and prosecutor Shafqaat Chaudhry presented their arguments.
The cases pertaining to torture on SSP and attack on Parliament and PTV Headquarters were filed against Imran Khan after PTI’s 2014 sit-in in the federal capital.
In his arguments, Imran Khan’s lawyer Babar Awan had informed court that 11 witnesses had recorded their statements in SSP torture case, and not even one was against his client.
Awan said the PTI chairman was not present on the incident spot when SSP Asmatullah Junejo was tortured.
On the other hand, the prosecutor Shafqaat Chaudhry had requested the court to reject Imran Khan’s bail plea, maintaining that he provoked party workers to attack the police.
Prosecutor pleaded before the court for recovery of Imran’s mobile phone which he used to instigate his party workers adding he urged court to order arrest of Imran otherwise case would be disturbed.
“NADRA identified 20 people from PAT and PTI who attacked PTV,” told Shafqaat Chaudhry.
Prosecutor presented record of telephonic conversation between Imran Khan and Dr. Alvi that was objected by PTI counsel, Dr. Babar Awan questioning that under which law personal conversation was recorded?
“Government only wants to get mobile phone of Imran but Imran has nothing to do with PTV attack,” Babar Awan told the court.
Prosecutor pointed out that Alvi had informed Imran about attack on national TV channel which the later praised.
After hearing the arguments, the court reserved the judgement and ordered to announce it at 2:30 pm on the same day.
Later on, the court confirmed bail of chairman PTI, Imran Khan.
Talking to media outside the court, Imran Khan said: “The decision proves that I am sadiq (truthful) and ameen (righteous), not a terrorist.”
“I am not a favorite child, I abide by law, cases are being lodged against me because I face them, if I become ‘double shah’ or ‘Khursheed Shah’, cases against me would also be withered away but we are competing against a mafia,” said Imran while talking to journalists.
“If NRO be given to Nawaz, I would request the apex court to open jails and release all the prisoners,” he mentioned.
He also posted a similar statement on Twitter:
My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist. Moreover, the SC has pronounced me Sadiq and Ameen and I am coming after them crooks!
Imran Khan said that he had been proven ‘Sadiq’ and ‘Ameen’ by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in its earlier judgment as well.
“I handed over to the court documents that dated back 40 years to prove my innocence,” he said.
Earlier, Khan hit out at US President Donald J Trump for his recent criticism on Pakistan, stating that he was ignorant of the basics of the war in Afghanistan.
“Pakistan had encountered a huge loss amounting to US$100,000 billion due to America’s War on Terror,” he added.
The PTI chief said that when he was at first critical of America’s invasion of Afghanistan and sending troops to Pakistan’s tribal belt, people called him ‘Taliban Khan’.
“You can access the footage of my speeches in National Assembly,” he said. “I was against fighting America’s war for dollars and had spoken out against it,” he added.
Imran Khan said that Pakistan had destroyed itself in fighting a war that was not its own to begin with for the sake of dollars.
“We lost 70,000 lives in America’s war,” he said. “Trump’s recent statement should serve as an example for all of us. Regardless of whatever aid a country offers, we should not go to war for it,” he added.
