KARACHI, (Parliament Times) :Journalists, media workers and media organizations in Karachi (Pakistan) are facing a very unfavorable situation. Such a situation can lead to serious threats to the democratic system of press freedom. These views were expressed at the Media Freedom Round Table Conference organized by CPNE. In which a large number of journalists and representatives of media organizations participated. In the conference, they pledged to fight against all kinds of anti-media trends, events and actions while expressing their commitment to jointly struggle for the protection, stability and promotion of media freedom. The conference was attended by representatives of Amand, PFUJ, Karachi Press Club, KUJ (Dastur), KUJ (Burna), CEJ, PPF and civil society and senior journalists and editors. Azhar Abbas, Mazhar Abbas, Saeed Sarbazi, Lala Asad Pathan, GM Jamali, Faheem Siddiqui, AH Khanzada, Rashid Aziz, Hassan Abbas, Aziz Jamali, Ms. Amber Rahim Shamsi, Owais Aslam Ali, Dr. Tauseef Ahmed Khan, from the conference. Dr. Jabbar Khattak, Maqsood Yousufi, Anwar Sajdi, Abdul Khaliq Marshall and Aamir Mehmood spoke. Speaking on this occasion, the speakers said that the freedom of press in Pakistan has been facing difficulties all along but now the situation has become very dangerous. The ground has been narrowed for journalists and they do not get protection even abroad. The killing of the slain journalist Arshad Sharif was made a sign of truth and an example for writing the truth. Similarly, by prosecuting Imad Yusuf for sedition, the message is being sent that journalists can be involved in cases with punishments like death penalty and life imprisonment. In these circumstances, all journalistic organizations have to face the challenges together and CPNE should form a Media Freedom Desk with the cooperation of all journalistic organizations to combat attacks and violence against journalists, record these events in a coordinated manner. A historical document can be compiled by keeping it in. The participants of the conference also emphasized the need to make the Journalist Protection Commission established in Sindh active immediately. He further said that confiscation of mobile phones and laptops of journalists is also illegal. Apart from this, the media freedom report issued by CPNE was also launched in the conference, while at the beginning of the conference, Jawaria Arshad, the widow of Shaheed Arshad Sharif, said that before Arshad Sharif’s murder in 2022, our family also did this in 2017. What was the situation faced? He said that the Supreme Court has taken suo motu notice and formed a new JIT, but even after 100 days of the murder incident, the elements who registered 16 cases against Arshad Sharif and shut down his channel are yet to be punished. I have not been brought. Which is a question mark on the performance of justice institutions in our country. Athar Mateen’s brother Tariq Mateen said that it has been a year since Athar Mateen’s murder, but the case has not been heard despite the arrest of his killer.
