Neither terrorism nor economic crisis is the potential threat to the existence of Pakistan but the climate change is. Not only Air quality and rivers but also food, health, clothing and infrastructure is under the big threat. The nature of this non-traditional issue is multi-dimensional. If the issue is not seriously taken into account, perhaps it will be challenging to stay anymore in a number of regions in the world as evident from history. Pakistan owns the world’s most glaciers in the north and Arabian Sea in the south. Every year, Glaciers are melting so heavily that cause destructive floods as it is clear from the year 2022. Infrastructure, agriculture and eventually life standard was heavily affected. According to a German think tank, Pakistan is the 5th most affected country by climate change in the world. While United Nations reported that Pakistan is losing 26 billion dollars per year due to destructions by climate change. Rise in water level of rivers and Sea causes soil erosion, compelling formigration of the people towards safe Cities. In future,Punjab, having five rivers passing through it, may be drowned in floods. Same with the northern areas as being surrounded by glaciers. In the south, similar to Thatta and Badin, Sindh may be dangerously affecteddue to soil erosion, heavy rains and storms. Till 2060, Karachi has been predicted to be downed by in water. Considering the major component (CO2) that is causing shifts in temperature, summer and winter both seasons may go to extreme. The time of both seasons is being integrated into each other and so is the deviation in time of the rainy season. -(Continue) All this is negatively affecting the growth of crops, food, clothing of people and their life style. Gradual rise in CO2 level of air may also cause lethal diseases. As Christopher Lescelles writes in the “Short History of the world”, there have been five such times in the history of universe when life was destroyed at large scale due to climate change. Two of these five times are major: -“Permian extinction when 96% of life was destroyed, and K-T extinction when Dinosaurs becameextinct.” One of the big reasons of these extinctions was Climate change. So, are we also going to the stage when there will be no more stay earth? In this modern era, Technology may be helpful in controlling the level of CO2. We may use alternative fuel in industry and transport. Harmful gases may also be filtered. But major issue in regarding Pakistan is Deforestation. 33% forests on the total land of Pakistan is now only 5% remaining. We direly need some plans like one billion tree. It can be the best way to prevent destruction unlike Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro and Gandhara Civilizations. The writer is the student of International Relations and Politics in IIU Islamabad
