Dowry means a gift given by a girl’s parents at the time of marriage. This is a symbol of love and respect. It is the girl’s help that enables her to build her house. However, over time, the sense of dowry changed. It has become a social evil. Dowry In some cultures, when a couple gets married, the bride or her family pays the groom a certain amount of money or property. This payment is called a dowry. A dowry is an evil act or disease that leads to disruption and imbalance in the life process. The majority of girls find it difficult to marry because of the boy’s dowry requirements. It preaches marriage, but modern man’s materialistic approach has ruined this whole system. The custom of dowry in South Asia is centuries old. Women were not entitled to an inheritance, so families gave brides gifts of cash or jewelry to maintain their independence after marriage. It is the culture of many countries, including Pakistan. Dowry is a term that refers to what a girl needs to marry and what her parents give to their daughter. Dowry is not required in Islam. A dowry does not only include cash payments. A dowry is her 10-15 clothes for a wife, clothes for her in-laws, groceries, or clothes that a husband and wife can use for her one year. A dowry may include dishes, furniture, spoons, pillows, duvets, etc. According to participants, in-laws expect various forms of dowry, including bungalows, cars, motorbikes and money. Dowry death is the death of a young woman who is driven to murder or suicide by her husband in South Asian countries, especially India. This is due to her husband constantly trying to extort more dowry from her bride and family. Dowry has led to an increase in rapes and murders. It places a financial burden on the bride’s family. It also contributes to the increase in child marriage, which has yet to be fully eradicated. And above all, it degrades the status of women in society. Despite the fact that dowry is considered a crime, there are ways to eradicate the dowry system as there are no laws requiring people to openly demand dowry. This is primarily due to the lack of fear of the law. Existing laws are not strictly enforced and decisions on lawsuits filed take a long time. There was an incident where the police were insensitive. We should have tighter control over our laws, enforce gender equality, and recognize that we are a male-dominated society. Gender discrimination starts at birth. Boys take precedence over girls (this may not be the case in all cases). Empowering women requires a fundamental mindset shift. Equality means equal opportunities for men and women. Being different doesn’t mean being weak. Both men and women can respect each other and live together in love. This idea should be instilled in every child at home and at school. You can’t change history, but you can create a brighter future. Women’s empowerment is key to education. Economic independence is essential for women to become independent. Parents are better off investing in their girls’ education than saving money for a dowry. We women, too, must learn to fight for our rights and protest these evils. God helps those who help themselves. Awareness Each of us should be aware of how to protect ourselves from a dowry. Some guidelines, do not proceed with marriage if there are financial demands – gifts are given out of respect and love and are not asked for. If the groom’s family asks/specifies money, come back with a clue. If you need a dowry after marriage, leave home. Don’t wait under false dreams for things to get better. Prevention is always better than cure, Complaining against dowry demanding families, Dowry promises, Marriage is a celebration of love, Greed must be removed from equality, Social perception is dowry the first need of our society.
