The Constitution of Pakistan guarantees security of persons under article 9. Whereas the security of persons in Karachi remains vulnerable and deteriorated. It has become challenging to travel anywhere in Karachi without being robbed or snatched, as the crimes in Karachi have increased by leaps and bounce. Citizens of Karachi are robbed on a daily basis of mobile phones, motorcycles and cars along with robberies in different shops in daylight in almost every vicinity and every day. Keeping valuables such as phones and other stuff has become a problem. It has resulted in a deteriorated security situation and scores of victims have lost life due to resistance or other reasons by robbers. The financial hub has a crime rate of big magnitude. Karachi has become really unsafe for anyone who is in the city, which has further exacerbated the reputation of the city and it poses many questions to one’s mind regarding the efficiency of police and other law and order maintaining institutions. Despite various assurances by the police and government, the situation in the city remains fragile and the life of a citizen remains under threat.
Moreover, it is an infringement of the fundamental rights guaranteed under the constitution; specifically of safety of person and property, supreme law of the land. Citizens hardly get a positive response from police stations, for which usually victims do not go for reporting the crime. Police and other institutions must ensure security of citizens of Karachi which is their fundamental and constitutional duty. Moreover, citizens must be entertained and facilitated while reporting a crime, without any humiliation. Karachi must be made a peaceful city, which requires pragmatic approach and effective steps in both letter and spirit. Citizens, as I , appeal to the government and law enforcement agencies as police to improve law and order situation for saving lives and properties of citizens.
