“Every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not; and often times we call a man cold when he is only sad.” According to World Health Organization’s statistics, depression is a common illness, with more than 264 million people affected worldwide. Depression is a silent killer and effecting people of all ages. Many lives have been lost in depression. It can disrupt personal and professional relationships, create physical fatigue and exhaustion, and jeopardize a person’s ability to do his or her job. It is time we highlight and exchange our views on this phenomenon on a wider scale. It’s the perception that needs to change so people ask for help without fear of being judged. Ways to cope with Depression: There are some things you can do to cope with your symptoms and improve your quality of life. Talk to a Therapist: If you want to cope with depression you must go to a therapist. Therapist will help you to minimize your stress and change your lifestyle. You can address together are how to improve your self-esteem, switch from negative to positive thinking, and practice stress management. Build a Support Network: If you’re experiencing depression, you may feel like you want to withdraw socially and keep to yourself, either because of low self-esteem or a lack of interest but Social connections can help keep you from spiraling downward into deeper depression and from becoming isolated and alone with your thoughts. Go to the movies, share a brisk walk, or just catch up with a close friend it might lift your spirits. Stick to a Schedule: Maintaining a healthy and regular routine is very helpful for people with depression, says Nelson. “Many times with depression, people’s motivation drops,” he explains, making them feel unproductive and fueling feelings of low self-esteem. Schedule an activity that you have to do every day make it one you really enjoy and aim for as much balance as possible in your life. Try to eat a healthy Diet: Some people don’t feel like eating when they’re depressed and are at risk of becoming underweight. Others find comfort in food and can put on excess weight.try to eat healthy food. Improve Your Sleep Hygiene: Sleep and mood are intimately related. A 2014 study found that 80% of people with major depressive disorder experience sleep disturbances. But, you might feel like you just can’t fall asleep. Or perhaps you struggle to get out of bed because you feel exhausted all the time. Create a Wellness Toolbox: A wellness toolbox is a set of tools that you can use to help soothe yourself when you are feeling down. The tools you find most helpful might not work for someone else so it’s important to carefully consider what things can help you feel your best. Cuddling your pet, listening to your favorite music, taking a warm bath, or reading a good book are just a few tools you might find helpful. Express Yourself in Writing: Writing in a journal is great therapy and can help you manage depression. You can relieve stress by being open about your thoughts, feelings, and concerns in your writing and stress management is an important part of living well with depression. Be totally honest in your private journal. Writing down your feelings and challenges with depression can release pent-up emotions. You’ll be amazed at how much better you feel after putting pen to paper for just a few minutes each day. Notice good things: Depression affects a person’s view of things. Things can seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. To shift your view, make it a goal to notice 3 good things in every day. The more you notice what’s good, the more good you will notice. Most of all, if you’re going through depression, show yourself some compassion and kindness. When you’re going through a hard time, it helps to know you’re not alone. Be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal.
