The military leadership on Tuesday took a serious view of the Indian repression in the Indian occupied Kashmir to crush the peaceful political struggle of the Kashmiris for the just right of self determination. During the Corps Commanders Conference held at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, the military top brass reiterated its resolve to continue political, diplomatic and moral support to the Kashmiris in the Indian occupied Kashmir. The conference presided by Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa noted that frequent ceasefire violations of the Line of Control (LoC) deliberately targeting innocent citizens was part of the Indian strategy to divert attention of the international community from the atrocities being committed by the Indian security forces against the Kashmiris in the occupied Kashmir. The conference observed that Indian repressive policy against Kashmiris is failing and its gross violation of human rights has been exposed to the world.
Pakistan’s military as well as the civilian leadership have always supported the legitimate cause of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and sought a settlement of the dispute through peaceful means as they strongly believe that dialogue was the only civilized way to find a solution to the lingering conflict that has been a major cause of tension in the region. But the Indian leadership, on the contrary, is adamant to settle the issue through military might by suppressing the voice of Kashmiri people. The fact is that India has a history of backtracking from its promises and commitments made with the people of Kashmir or with the international community. First Indians agreed to resolve the Kashmir dispute in line with the Kashmiris’ aspirations and in accordance with the UN resolutions but later on they refused to hold referendum, which was supposed to be held in the region to allow Kashmiris’ to decide their political future. Fearing outcome of the plebiscite result New Delhi always rejected Pakistan’s call for holding referendum in Kashmir. Because of its fear that Kashmiris will not vote for India, it continued with its policy of dilly dallying tactics obviously to scuttle diplomatic efforts aimed at finding an amicable solution to the long standing dispute, which happens to be the root cause of tension in the region. Rather than responding to peace overtures of Islamabad, New Delhi has created a war situation on borders particularly on the Line of control having a potential to bring both nuclear-armed states to the brink of another devastating war. In given the highly volatile situation in the region it is imperative that the United Nations and influential governments across the globe should play their much needed role to seek solution to the Kashmir conflict before the outbreak of yet another war between the two countries, which will be a monumental disaster that will engulf not only the region but large part of the world. Kashmir, which is now rightly referred as a brutal tragedy of broken promises merits urgent attention of the world community. It is high time that the global community should take cognizance of the worsening political and human rights situation in Indian held territory of Jammu and Kashmir and take practical steps to alleviate sufferings of innocent people who over the past 70 years have been trapped in the deadly conflict that had brought death and destruction in the disputed territory.
