Karachi: Pasban Democratic Party President Altaf Shakoor, expressing grave concern over ugly incidents related to the Karachi Press Club (KPC), has said that curbs on media and freedom of expression would not be accepted.
In a statement here Monday, he said intruding of some plainclothes led by a police mobile van into the Karachi Press Club without any permission or authority and alleged harassment of journalists by them is a serious issue. He said it was a shameful attack on the freedom of media. He said the silence of both provincial and federal governments on this issue has exposed their tall claims of being the champions of media freedom.
Altaf Shakoor said curbs of media and journalists who write truth is creating a disgrace for our nation at international level. He said this type of negative activities would result in harmful sequences and promote a sense insecurity amongst citizens which is not good for the solidarity of this country. He said the beauty of democracy is in giving freedom to media and tolerating its positive criticism.
He said police or other institutions should not meddle into the affairs of media and journalists and refrain from creating curbs on media. He said the media is the fourth pillar of the state and it has been playing a crucial role for making Pakistan a law-abiding and just-based society. He said the Pasban stands shoulder by shoulder with the media and journalists and strongly condemns such tactics to browbeat the Pakistani media.
