Islamabad: Supreme Court (SC) has constituted a commission under Wafaqi Mohtasib to determine the causes of outbreak of fire on Margalla Hills and for the protection of these hills.
The court has ordered the commission to present its recommendations to it within 15 days. The members of commission will include the petitioner Roedad Khan deputy attorney general and representatives of CDA and Municipal Corporation. A 3-member bench of SC presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar Monday took up for hearing suo motu notice pertaining to fire incident on Margalla Hills. At the inception of hearing of the case, the CJP inquired from the authorities present in the court “ the fire gripped the forests for three days. Was CDA having no fire extinguishing equipments. CDA told the court “ you are right sir, we are having no fire extinguishing equipments.
CJP remarked “ hold the inquiry to ascertain how fire broke out on Margalla Hills. If you have no fire extinguishing equipments then purchase them. CDA said funds have to be allocated to purchase the equipments. We will purchase the equipments after the funds are earmarked.
CJP remarked Disaster Management built one road in Bala Kot at the cost of Rs 40 billions. CDA told the court that funds will be provided to them in the third week of July to purchase fire extinguishing equipments.
CJP remarked “ as to why we should not constitute commission for protection of Margalla Hills. Commission should work on fast track basis and present its report. The court while constituting commission adjourned the hearing of the case for two weeks. The court directed the commission to present its report within 15 days.
