The Islamabad High Court judge justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui on Tuesday made startling revelations about the corruption and moral turpitude in police department saying that 90 per cent policemen were corrupt. “In the day, they take drugs and at night they help prostitutes carry out their business, Justice Siddiqui observed while hearing a case pertaining to increasing crime rate in Islamabad. Justice Siddiqui also referred to sexual harassment of woman police officials, saying that women officials were victims in entire Pakistan. “If the law would have permitted, the rapist police officials would have been shot dead in front of the public”, he said. The IHC bench inquired from the IG Islamabad what steps he had taken for eradication of drugs and prostitution from the city. The IHC bench had directed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Sultan Azam Temoori to submit a comprehensive report within 15 days regarding the sale and purchase of drugs in the federal capital.

Justice Siddiqui had expressed serious concerns over the sorry state of affairs in the capital city, which is otherwise considered as a safe and crime-free city all over the country. As for as use of liquor, Sheesha and other narcotics are concerned the learned judge had rightly pointed out that such immoral practices have become a new norm. Needless to say, this illicit business of narcotics has been fast spreading in the peripheries of the capital as well but authorities at the helm of affairs have not been able to arrest this growing trend of harmful sale & purchase of drugs and liquor in capital, which is taking heavy toll on younger generation. Crime has always been an integral part of a society but role of police remains crucial in prevention and detection of the crime. But the fact is that crime and corruption go hand-in-hand. While digging deep into the matter, one could realize the fact that the rampant corruption in police department is one of the major reasons behind the increasing rate of crime not only in the capital city but throughout the country. No doubt there could be several other factors affecting the effectiveness of police performance but elimination of corruption from police remains the key driving force to ensure a crime-free society. One hopes that the IG Islamabad will walk his talk of purging the police from corrupt officials at all costs.
