Lahore: PTI newly elected Senator Sarwar Chaudhry has appeared before Supreme Court Lahore registry with his stance on quitting dual nationality.
A 3-member bench of SC presided over by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar took up the case for hearing Thursday.
SC remarked “ this is Pakistan representative. When this representative saw his benefit outside Pakistan he obtained nationality of that country. When this representative saw the benefits of this country then he remembered love his motherland.
Senator Chaudhry Sarwar said he had abandoned British nationality in 2013.
The court directed him to file affidavit.
The court appointed Khalid Khan and B ilal Manto as amicus curiae in dual nationality case.
PTI leader Andleeb Abbasi told the court Sadia Abbasi sister of Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Nuzhat Sadiq have remained members of parliament for five years while holding dual nationality. They have decided to quit dual nationality to become senator which is tantamount to encroach upon the rights of deserving candidates.
CJP remarked we are sitting here to protect your rights. Therefore, we have taken suo motu notice. Dual nationality decision came in 2012. Their disqualification should start from that time.
Counsel for the newly elected senators Nuzhat Sadiq and Sadia Abbasi prayed that the hearing of this case be conducted early so that oath taking phase could be completed.
CJP remarked oath taking will take place after notification is issued. We will hear this case in Islamabad.
The court adjourned the hearing of the case till March 13.
