As the government and policy making institutions are hectically engaged in restructuring foreign policy, a key strategy for a balanced approach is to deepen links with all its regional countries more specifically with China as both the nations have always stood by each other in difficult times.
The Foreign Minister Khawja Asif’s ongoing official visit to Beijing at this point of time is important for taking common stance on regional and international issues. The visit is seen as another milestone in the decades’ long bilateral relationship of mutual co-operation and co-ordination. Regardless of what transpired in the the BRICS nations summit in China recently, Beijing has yet again reaffirmed its continued and firm support to Pakistan in war against terrorism.
Addressing a joint press conference with Pakistan foreign minister Khawaja Asif in Beijing, Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi stated that China fully backs Pakistan in its fight against terrorism and supports its neighbours in safeguarding its sovereignty. “The relationship between China and Pakistan remains rock-firm and unbreakable”, Wang said, adding that China will continue to play its role in Pakistan’s progress and development. In a veiling reference to the US that has been criticizing Pakistan for its anti-terror policies every now and then, Wang said that some countries should acknowledge Pakistan’s role in countering terrorism. He said that Pakistan has given many sacrifices in combating the war on terror. The all-weather strategic partners are enjoying a relationship based on self-respect, equality, mutual trust, non-interference and common agenda of socioeconomic development. Since Pakistan is an important partner in the OBOR initiative one hopes that this relationship between the two countries would grow stronger and stronger with every passing day. China is the most trusted friend of Pakistan and consulting each other on all global issues will be instrumental to address the regional concerns. Moreover the foreign minister’s upcoming assignments to reach out to the leadership of the neighbouring countries including Afghanistan, Russia and Iran will provide further impetus to government’s efforts to strengthen its relations with all neighbouring countries. In the aftermath of the BRICS’ declaration and the Donald Trump’s tirade against Pakistan, the Government’s decision to reach out to neighbours is a welcome step, which is largely seen as a wise move in right direction. The initiative would certainly help the government to counter the so-called narrative of “Pakistan’s isolation” being paddled by a neighbouring country.
