Verdict reserved on maintainability of plea seeks contempt case against Sharif

LAHORE: Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday has reserved a judgement on maintainability of a petition seeking contempt proceedings against deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for raging at judges and judiciary following his ouster in the Panama Papers case.

Presenting arguments against the petition, Nawaz Sharif’s counsel termed the petitioner’s request as void.

To which the petitioner contended that Nawaz Sharif in aftermath of his ouster has been publicly raging at Supreme Court’s judges, tainting the public veneration for judicial system.

Advocate Azhar Siddiqui – the petitioner – further said that the deposed PM Sharif in his public speeches, during his homecoming rally en route to Lahore on the historic GT Road, took aim at the judges who had given the disqualification verdict in the Panamagate case.

Earlier this week, LHC had issued notice to ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and other respondents on the petition.

The court had also issued notices to foreign minister Khawaja Asif, Pakistan Railways minister Khawaja Saad Rafiqu and 12 other PML-N leaders to file their comments till August 25.

The petitioner had also lamented that Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) did not take any action against news channels for airing his contemptuous remarks.

It is worth mentioning here that Supreme Court through a verdict dated July 28 had disqualified Nawaz Sharif for concealing his salary from a Dubai-based company.
