London: Liverpool poised for the imminent departure of Philippe Coutinho after the Brazil international handed in a transfer request this week.
He is expected to join Barcelona who are in desperate need of a replacement for Neymar following his £200million move to Paris Saint-Germain.
And according to foreign newspaper The Mirror on Sunday, Jurgen Klopp has already begun identifying a number of targets to replace the 25-year-old.
A £60m bid for Napoli’s Lorenzo Insigne has reportedly already been lodged, however, it that fails the Reds will turn their attention to Schalke’s Max Meyer.
he report says Klopp has been a long-term admirer of the 21-year-old and attempted to sign him while at Borussia Dortmund.
The Germany international has rejected the offer of a new contract at Schalke and only has a year left on his current deal.
And sources close to the player claim he is keen to move to the Premier League and team up with Klopp.
“I received an offer of a contract extension, but with my management I decided to turn it down,” Meyer said in June.
And when asked if it would mean he would leave the Veltins Arena this summer, he added: “That’s the question…
“It’s clear that I have to assert myself more next season.
Schalke have already lost one player – Sead Kolasinac – to the Premier League this summer, who joined Arsenal on a free transfer.
And the German side could be forced to cash in on Meyer or risk the same situation occurring with the midfielder next summer.
