The Supreme Court served a contempt notice to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader and former senator Nehal Hashmi over his threatening remarks against apex court judges and members of the JIT who are probing the Sharif family’s offshore wealth. During the hearing of a suo motu notice taken by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, a three- judge bench of the top court, headed by Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, directed the ruling party’s lawmaker to submit his response by June 5. The bench directed Attorney General of Pakistan Ashtar Ausaf Ali, who has been appointed as prosecutor, to collect material related to the case. Justice Ejaz remarked that they are keeping an eye on what is going on. The court observed that a systematic campaign was being run by the government against judges of the apex court and the JIT. Justice Azmat Saeed Sheikh said “terrorist mafias threaten judges and the incumbent government is acting like itâ€. The hearing of the case was adjourned till 5th June. Talking to media persons outside Supreme Court Nehal Hashmi denied having made remarks against judiciary and JIT. He said that he did not give any controversial remarks against those who are investigating Nawaz sharif’s son. Nehal Hashmi had relinquished his seat in the House after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif took notice of his threatening speech. Hashmi was summoned to the Prime Minister House following his speech and reportedly, Special Assistant to PM on Political Affairs, Asif Kirmani convened a meeting with the senior member of the party to convey premier’s reservations. Aggressive speech of the senator came in after Hussain Nawaz, premier’s son was summoned by the JIT for two consecutive days. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had revoked party’s membership of Senator Nehal Hashmi. Minister of State for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb said that the party does not support what Hashmi said and that it was his personal opinion. She said the prime minister believes in accountability, adding that he has sought an explanation from Hashmi for his remarks. The opposition came down hard on PML-N leader Nehal Hashmi over his provocative speech. PTI Chairman Imran Khan took to Twitter to criticise Hashmi’s statements. “Did the goons of Nawaz Sharif not attack the Supreme Court in the past? When they could not buy a chief justice, they attacked him. They carried briefcases to the judges in Quetta to purchase them. It is being reported that this incident highlights PML-N’s plan to influence the decision of the JIT. The fact is that the ruling party set a precedent of accountability by taking strict action against party member. Nehal Hashmi was a loyalist leader of the party but he put himself and the party into trouble by launching scathing attack on the judiciary and Joint Investigation Team. No one would accept what Nehal Hashmi said against an esteemed institution. PML-N leadership should also discipline its workers and leaders urging them to exercise utmost restraint and care in issuing statements especially on sensitive issues. All political parties should not politicise the issue as the strict action has been taken by PML-N against Nihal Hashmi and also court has taken suo motu against his statement and he has also been served contempt of court notice.
