Meem Zay Rifat
It is good to note that with continued blessings of Almighty Allah and hard work of the farmers, Punjab has got an excellent wheat crop and per acre yield has also accordingly increased appreciably due to provision of subsidy and other measures taken by the Punjab Government. This good tiding was given, as per the reports in the media, by Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the meeting of the Provincial Cabinet which has initially fixed wheat procurement target at four million metric tons at the supporting price of Rs 1300 per 40 kg which has somehow remained unchanged for 2017-18 so far. The meeting approved wheat procurement policy 2017-18 and decided that the provision of gunny bags to the farmers for taking their produce to the nearest procurement centres will commence from April 16 and rights of the farmers will be firmly and prudently defended by the provincial government ensuring that nobody deprives the farmers of their due rights in any manner, All these decisions of the Provincial Cabinet and assertions of the Chief Minister regarding enforcement of the approved wheat procurement policy are indeed quite commendable .It will , however, be appreciated more that farmers complaints during previous wheat procurement campaigns about non- availability of gunny bags in required numbers and reported mismanagement and discrimination on various grounds of the gunny bags are not only addressed at the appropriate but strict steps taken prior to commence of the wheat policy that such complaints do not reoccur this time. It is also commendable that the chief minister has designated the ministers, advisors and provincial secretaries to regularly visit procurement centres in their assigned districts throughout the province and that the chief minister himself will be personally monitoring wheat procurement campaign. If the chief minister pays surprise visits to the wheat procurement centres, preferably incognito, then surely all concerned will remain on their toes and perform their assigned duties efficiently, honestly in a transparent manner ensuring the farmers get fixed price for their every grain of their produce and no hanky panky is done with them by anyone at any stage.
