ISLAMABAD: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam Fazl leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Friday said that for bringing an end to terrorism, military courts are crucial. He said that for the enduring peace in the country all the political parties are on the same page. Fazl said that controversial words shouldn’t be made a part of the law and pitting religion and politics against each other is against the national interest.
The JUI-F chief expressed surprise over the Pakistan people’s Party’s stance. The PPP has said that it wanted the old draft of the document regarding military courts’ functioning.
“I don’t expect anything good from the PTI,” he said.
Meanwhile, the sixth session of parliamentary leaders in the special committee ended in moot. The government in today’s session, presented a new Constitutional document, aimed at bringing Opposition parties together on the subject of military courts. The document, however, failed to gain support from the parliamentary leaders. PPP leader Naveed Qamar said that the government agreed to bring down the duration of military courts to two from three years.

Representatives of parliamentary parties on Thursday had again failed to reach a consensus on the issue of extension of the term of military courts.

Pakistan People’s Party had boycotted the session, while Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan and Awami National Party had backed the PPP’s stance on the issue.
