The opposition parties have called for the resignation of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider after the controversial remarks made by him regarding the future of Kashmir took the whole country by storm. Haider’s supporters, on the other hand, have rebuked the opposition leaders for their demand.
The statement in question was reportedly given by Haider during a joint presser with Gilgit-Baltistan’s Chief Minister Hafeezur Rehman at the Kashmir House in Islamabad in the wake of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification by the Supreme Court of Pakistan. At their thanksgiving rally, both the PTI chief and Awami Muslim League head Sheikh Rashid referred to Haider with a number of rude titles and called upon the people of AJK to surround his residence in Muzaffarabad in protest. The leaders’ strong language kicked up a series of counter attacks from PML-N activists and soon mainstream and social media were swarmed with critical comments from both sides. PM AJK himself addressed a press conference for a third consecutive day in Islamabad, where he said that PTI chief’s abusive remarks against him amounted to insult towards Kashmiri nation and that Haider himself would present his case before his people. He reaffirmed that the future of Kashmiri people was linked with Pakistan.Ever since the ouster of Nawaz Sharif from premiership, a blizzard of political conflict and uncertainity has over taken the country. The Muslim leaguers pushing full throttle to avenge their loss and Tehreek-e-Insaf attempting to solidify their gains and continue with the same momentum against the prime ministerial nominees after drawing first blood. Pakistani media persons and politicians calling for the AJK prime minister to be tried under Article 6, causing a reactionary wave among Haider’s following, resulting in symbolic protests in his stronger constituencies in AJK, the seven constituencies of the capital division of AJK, Muzaffarabad, all of which went for the PM in the last elections.
The Muslim Conference, whose rule was shared over decades by Haider and his family though now vehemently criticised by the same, had a broader and considerably dynamic view to the question of annexation. Despite his categorical denial of statement by AJK PM that a section of media attributed to him, opposition political parties and politicians in Pakistan and some media anchors continue to lash AJK PM. Very derogatory language is being used against him and very cheap remarks are being given which are against dignity of People of Kashmir. The way Raja Farooq Haider has been treated after his controversial statement is very deplorable and it sent negative impression to people of Azad Kashmir. Such attitude is condemnable and all opposition parties and his opponents should avoid further exploitation of the situation for their vested political interests. The controversy must be ended otherwise it may harm interests of Pakistan and put adverse impact on Kashmir issue and ongoing freedom struggle in occupied Kashmir.
