Islamabad : The Supreme Court has directed to prepare a road map for the determination of standard and prices of medicines and submit it.
On Wednesday, a three member bench of apex court headed by Chief Justice (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar has conducted the hearing of the suo motu case regarding price increase of medicines.
During the course of the hearing, CJP has observed that as per rules and regulations of Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and Karachi Development Authority (KDA) if application was not decided within 90 days, the map of the house of building is automatically considers approved.
“Such clause is included in drug policy too. The object of such clauses was to benefit the people adding that such clauses of drug policy would be declared null and void”, he added.
CJP said that automatic increase in the prices of medicine is benefited to companies while people face loss. After fixed period, application would not be considered approved.
On delay, Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) will be fined Rs 5000 on daily basis. People say that medicine is substandard and very costly. The patient purchase medicine and did not get relief. People say that medicines are cheap in India. The businessmen would not face their financial loss but the ratio of profit should be suitable. DRAP should itself review where complication exist in its law and set the formula about the increase the prices of medicines and this process be completed within days. Companies would not approach towards courts if DRAP itself justify.
The CJP has remarked that Secretary services said to do this task while consider it Jihad. No one has to do the task where institutions failed. Court stay order would not create hurdle in the way of DRAP.
“All stakeholders should prepare the road map abut prices and standard of medicine and submit it on today (Thursday). The lawyers of the companies, DRAP and Secretary Health should collectively prepare the suggestions. Court would review the suggestions and announce the verdict”, CJP added.
Later, the court has adjourned the hearing of the case for one day.
