Islamabad: The Supreme Court on Monday sought a comprehensive report regarding withdrawal of security of unauthorized persons in the provinces.
The apex court also directed the top police officials to ensure the provision of security to all those who face genuine security threats.
During the hearing of a suo motu case regarding the provision of security to unauthorized persons, the chief justice remarked being a former prime minister Nawaz Sharif should be provided security, adding that it is his legal right. The chief justice further remarked, the court doesn’t put anyone’s life in danger.
A three-member bench led by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar heard the case. The hearning has been adjourned till the next week. The court remarked all provincials advocate generals should be in the court.
The chief justice remarked some people and organizations have reservations regarding withdrawal of unauthorized persons, adding that those who genuinely face life threats should be provided security.
The top court judge remarked that more than Rs1 billion were being spent on the security of unauthorized persons, besides officials in plain cloth were also deployed on their guard.
The court also sought report about the expenditures of vehicles that were on security duty.
The court remarked no minister’s relatives or friends are authorized to avail official security.
The Punjab government’s counsel informed the top court that the security of 46 unauthorized person’s had been withdrawn, adding their annual expenditure was about Rs1.38 billion. The court remarked that the police department would have to see whom security should be provided.
The IG Islamabad informed the court that the police department had provided security to those persons whom names were included in the list issued by the interior ministry, assuring the top court that the department will take review of unauthorized persons security. The security of 264 persons had been withdrawn, the top court was informed.
The Sindh government counsel informed the court that the police department had withdrawn over 5,000 personnel. However, the chief justice remarked these statistics are wrong.
The chief justice said a committee should be formed to analysis of the security. The case hearing has been adjourned till the next week.
