The Indian state has miserably failed both militarily as well as politically to tackle the new wave of anti-India sentiment in Kashmir. Particularly the mass uprising, triggered after the martyrdom of Hizb Commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani, has put the BJP government of India under severe pressure as every drop of blood being shed on the streets of the valley has been cementing the Kashmiris’ resolve and every bullet being fired by its troops in the restive region fortifies the anti-Indian sentiment.Lt. Gen. D.S. Hooda, India’s senior military commander in the region has admitted it publicly that India is losing the battle in Kashmir. Veteran human rights activist Khurram Parvez said “India’s military might have crushed militancy to a large extent, but they’ve failed to change people’s mindsâ€. So the truth is that with each passing day Kashmir is slipping away from India. But the Indian state, which has mastered in the art of deceit and deception, has always tried to create a smoke screen to befool the international community vis-à -vis Kashmiris’ liberation struggle by weaving cobwebs of confusion around it.To defame the Kashmiris’ struggle for right to self determination at international level India, initially, launched a diplomatic offensive to portray the ongoing movement as a sponsored movement by linking it with cross border terrorism. After 9/11 episode, India was seen hectically engaged at diplomatic front to get the freedom movement in Kashmir tagged with that of international terrorism to gain international sympathy. The declaration of Syed Salahuddin as a global terrorist by US state department recently is, by and large, seen as a part of this greater conspiracy whereby India wanted to deprive Kashmir movement of the much needed international support. Domestically the Modi regime, unlike its predecessors, chose a different course of action to deal the situation in the region. Declaring a full-fledged war against the people of Kashmir they thought showering bullets and pellets on unarmed civilians; killing, maiming, blinding and humiliating Kashmiris, was the only way out but they failed. To kill the voice of dissent, occupation authorities over the past several months have started a witch hunt against Hurriyat leaders. Dozens of top rank Hurriyat leaders including Shabir Ahmed Shah, Altaf Ahmed Shah, Ayaz Akbar, Shahid-ul-Islam, Nayeem Ahmad Khan and others have been arrested under the cases, which have reportedly been disposed off by the courts.
The joint resistance leadership has taken strong exception to Indian authorities’ crackdown against Hurriyat leaders and said that National Investigation Agency (NIA) is being used as a war weapon against leadership, with its main objective to harass leadership. They said that the secret agencies, working on whims and fancies of New Delhi, have been assigned the task to malign Kashmiri leaders just to tarnish their public image besides sowing the seeds of discord among the masses in Kashmir. The fact is that Indian authorities since long have been using arrests, house detentions as a weapon of war to cow down pro-freedom leaders besides suppressing the voice of dissent in the disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian government and its secret agencies have started yet another anti-movement campaign whereby Hurriyat leaders are dragged and involved in baseless and concocted cases.Whatever the situation, the systematic genocide of Kashmiris and persecution of the Hurriyat leaders will not change the ground reality in Kashmir. India must bear in mind the fact that the sentiment, which is so widespread in Kashmir, can not be killed or jailed. Medgar Evers the renowned rights activist has rightly said, “You can kill a man, but you can’t kill an ideaâ€. So it is time that India should accept the ground reality and take practical steps to resolve the issue of Kashmir in its historical perspective.
