The role of education can’t be denied for the development of a society. Because education a plays pivotal role in success of a nation. Without education a nation can never flourish. Education can change fortune for any nation. As education gives us knowledge of world, daily happening, it gives us perspective of looking at life. It helps us in formulation of opinions with the help of education we can interpret things we can have point of view on things in life. It makes us strong mentally, socially and intellectually. As per constitution Article 25 A in the constitution of Pakistan it is the duty of governing body to provide free quality education to the age group of 5 years to 16 years but this is not being practiced.
Unfortunately literacy rate in Pakistan is very low as compared to other countries. Pakistan’s literacy rate has declined from 60 percent to 58 percent as revealed by the economic survey of Pakistan. The budget allocated for education is 2.83 percent which is insufficient for country like Pakistan and funds that are available are not spent effectively. According to United Nations Global Education Monitoring report the quality of education provided at primary level is 50 years back as per world standards and 60 years behind in its secondary education targets in Pakistan. Article 37-b urges the governments to ‘remove illiteracy and provide free and compulsory secondary education within a minimum possible period. With reference to the latest Pakistan Education Statistics Report by AEPAM, Ministry of Education Pakistan, there are 22.84 million children out of school. Of those children who do go to school, the vast majority receive an education of poor quality.43% of government schools are in a dangerous or dilapidated condition and lack basic facilities such as furniture, bathrooms, boundary walls, electricity and running water.21% government primary schools are operating with single teacher and 14% with single classroom. This detailed report published by Alif Aliaan explained all the aspect of education in Pakistan A study titled “Pakistan’s Education Crisis: The Real Story” noted that the United States, Britain and the World Bank poured money into Pakistan’s stagnating public education sector, but the number of children out of school is still second only to Nigeria. Unesco´s latest published figures suggest Pakistan has the second highest number of out of school children globally after Nigeria. It doesn’t get any better in adulthood, as Pakistan also has the highest number of illiterate adults in the world. These two reports have confirmed and boldly highlighted the fact that Pakistan is currently facing an education crisis. To top it all off, we have gender inequality issues in education. Out of the 5.06 million children not going to primary school, 60% are girls. According to recent country statistics, compared to a girl, a boy in Pakistan has a 15% higher chance of going to primary school.Unfortunately, the picture at secondary level is even bleaker. Only 612,531 girls are enrolled at higher secondary level with a high dropout rate pre-matric level. The need of hour is to uplift our education system. The problem in our setup is that we are deprived of the quality of education. Attention is required at elementary and secondary level. Educationist need to sit and think on best ways of reforms which we can take to improve our education setup. And on this regard we can take reference from successful country the globe. Education should be top priority of the government. In most educated countries in the World Canada is in on top. According to OECD over 56 percent of adults have earned some kind of education after high school. Primary and secondary education in Canada is free and mandatory for the children beginning at age of 5. During the World Economic Forum in Davos Canadian PM Justin Traudeau suggested that Canadians education was the great resource. He said that:”We need education to enable people to learn, think adapt.””Our natural resources are important and they always will be. But Canadians know that what it takes to grow and prosper isn’t just what’s under, it’s what between our ears.”Literacy is the fundamental building block of education it works in solution of many problem like poverty, corruption and poor health condition. Government should bring unity by introducing one educational setup in all institutions, so that class system can be eliminated. Quality of education should be focused .It should free at primary and secondary level so that everyone can acquire knowledge. The answer to the question what steps should be taken to improve our education system is given by Bill Frank’s:Stop teaching what you can Google or compute, and start teaching skills for being a good citizen and leading a responsible, happy, value filled life. Interpersonal communication, conflict resolution and negotiating, teamwork, developing a growth mindsets discovering interests and passions, how to tell truth from fiction, basic financial and economic literacy, job seeking skills including interviewing and resume writing, personal responsibility, health and hygiene and how to learn and study. Most of this should be done.
