The Indian army’s attack on AJK premier’s helicopter near line of control is yet another brazen breach of international law and a flagrant violation of truce agreement India and Pakistan had signed in 2003. The ceasefire violations by Indian troops on the line of control have intensified during the recent past more specifically after the BJP came to power in New Delhi. Earlier, Indian troops have destroyed public properties and targeted civilian populations by resorting to unprovoked shelling along the line of control. The Indian army targeted the ambulances and schools notwithstanding the fact that International law and human rights instruments stand for the sanctity of education and protection of civilians especially the children in conflict zones. They did not even spare the UNMOGIP officials, however, the fatal incident marked the first time that Indian troops fired shots at a civilian helicopter carrying no less a person than the prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The incident, which took place just a day before the UN Secretary General Mr. Antonio Guterres’s visit to New Delhi, amply demonstrates the level of Indian arrogance and a highly volatile situation the region has been stuck in for past several years. As per the law without a prior warning no country whatsoever can attack a non-combat chopper even if it (incidentally) trespasses or violates the airspace of other country. This kind of procedure is maintained even in war situations. Luckily, the chopper escaped the attack, the PM and his colleagues boarding the helicopter landed safely. It was a huge blunder, the government of Pakistan must lodge a strong protest and send a demarche to Indian High Commissioner to express the country’s concerns over this terrible incident, which could have pushed the entire region into yet another disaster. This kind of high-handedness and aggression had not only exposed India’s aggressive posturing and warmongering but also exposed its nefarious designs aimed at raising tensions in the region and delay any prospective talks on the issue of Kashmir that happens to be the bone of contention in the region. It is imperative that the world community should take serious notice of the matter and impress upon India to shun its traditional intransigence and restart dialogue with Pakistan to resolve political disputes peacefully instead of resorting to war-mongering. It is also time that New Delhi should realize the reality that it cannot divert world’s attention away from Kashmir issue simply by escalating tensions on LoC and keep harping on the issues of so-called cross-border terrorism and infiltration. India must understand the fact that they cannot befool the world every time. Kashmir issue is a reality, which India will have to face sooner or later.
