Islamabad, (Parliament Times) : As part of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO)’s ongoing commitment to fostering connections with diaspora communities, a delegation of officials embarked on a significant visit to Bradford aimed at engaging with British-Pakistanis. Led by Richard Lindsay, Head of the Pakistan Department, the delegation sought to establish deeper bonds with the approximately 140,000 individuals of Pakistani heritage residing in the city.

During their visit, the FCDO delegation convened with a spectrum of organizations, including Women Zone, Empowering Minds, and QED Foundation. Additionally, they had the privilege of meeting with select participants from the BBC’s acclaimed documentary series, “Bradford Aunties,” which sheds light on the preservation of skills, cultural heritage, and linguistic traditions across generational lines.

Reflecting on the day’s engagements, Richard Lindsay remarked, “Those of Pakistani heritage in Bradford play a pivotal role in the fabric of both the UK and Pakistan, contributing significantly through avenues such as Zakat, leadership initiatives, and cultural enrichment. Today has been marked by productive dialogue, celebrating the enduring partnership between the UK and Pakistan, while also engaging in candid discussions regarding the challenges that lie ahead.”

Discussions during the visit encompassed a broad spectrum of topics, including human rights, security concerns, and the imperative for immediate economic reform.

This visit follows closely on the heels of the inaugural convening of the UK-Pakistan Advisory Council, chaired by Richard Lindsay on Monday, 29 April. The advisory council, comprising representatives from the British-Pakistani community spanning various regions of the UK, boasts expertise across diverse sectors ranging from education and commerce to women’s empowerment and environmental sustainability. Its primary objective is to furnish guidance on strategies through which the UK can advance its collaborative endeavors with Pakistan.
