Islamabad, (Parliament Times) :  In a groundbreaking celebration of International Women’s Day 2024, the High Commission of Canada orchestrated its second annual Ambassador for the Day initiative on March 8th. The event, supported by the diplomatic community in Pakistan, marked a collaborative effort with the Government of Pakistan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Heritage and Culture Division, and the Pakistan National Council of the Arts.

Six young Pakistani women were provided with a unique opportunity to shadow diplomats from Canada, the EU, the UK, Germany, Austria, and Bulgaria, gaining firsthand experience of the day-to-day responsibilities of these pivotal roles.

Aligned with the theme “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” for International Women’s Day 2024, the program allowed the “Ambassadors for the Day” to interact with diplomats, and engage with representatives of the Government of Pakistan, civil society, and the media. They participated in diverse cultural diplomacy activities to understand the intricacies of diplomatic missions and the world of diplomacy in Pakistan.

The day commenced with participants assuming the role of Head of Mission, engaging with internal diplomatic teams, and managing official social media accounts. Events included an official lunch engagement discussing international engagement on combating climate change and advancing women’s participation in politics.

The participants attended a briefing by the Spokesperson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan, and a “Women in I.T. reception and panel discussion” hosted by the British High Commission.

The day culminated in a collaborative cultural diplomacy event at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts. Participants toured various art exhibits, including Canada’s “Drawing into Threads,” Austria’s Calliope exhibition, and a Digital Art showcase by the European Union. The event featured a “Climate Theater” by Accountability Lab, in partnership with the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives, bringing to life the experiences of climate change in Pakistan. The finale included a screening of Canada’s Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour, showcasing short films and documentaries emphasizing climate change impact, environmental conservation, outdoor adventure, and the prowess of female athletes.

The High Commissioner of Canada, Leslie Scanlon said: “I am thrilled that we were able to organize this meaningful initiative for a second year. Supporting and empowering women and girls will continue to be at the heart of our international development efforts.”

The British High Commissioner, Jane Marriott said: “I do not doubt if Umama wanted to, she’d make a formidable Ambassador. I’m also grateful to her for sharing her thoughtful insights on how young adults can drive gender equality.”

The EU Head of Delegation, Dr. Riina Kionka said: “We are excited that Seher Raza has stepped into the role of EU Ambassador for a day. We need more women in diplomacy.”

The German Ambassador, Alfred Grannas said: “Empowering women means embracing diversity, fostering inclusion, and unlocking humanity’s full potential. I am honored to give center stage to Fatima today, so she can be a voice for the women of her generation.”

The “Ambassador for a Day” initiative reflects ongoing efforts by Canada, the UK, the EU, Germany, Austria, and Bulgaria in Pakistan to engage with local partners and communities, promoting human rights, inclusion, equitable access, and equal opportunities, as well as joining efforts in combating the global climate crisis.
