This is a million dollar question which is frequently asked by many people who hardly read a single page a day, or aren’t bibliophiles. So, today you need not to worry about it. I will delve deep into the rich tapestry of strategies, which will, hoping that, help you to develop your reading habit. Reading is as necessary as an air to breathe in one’s life. Just like a person is useless or dead without an air, so is without reading. Reading books must be a top priority on the list of activities a person carries out in his/her daily routine. Reading helps you to navigate the journey of ideas and knowledge, and imbues you with critical and analytical thoughts and ideas that lock the barren horizon of preconceived ideas, prejudice, partiality, instead, paving way for thought-provoking and rational world—distinguishing from others. Furthermore, according to research published in Neurology, reading often can truly boost your mental capacity in addition to making you smarter. Regular reading strengthens memory by providing your brain with an excellent workout, much like going for a jog does for your cardiovascular system. Memory and brain function deteriorate with age, but reading on a daily basis may help delay this process and prolong mental acuity. A beautiful quote of Carl Sagon, i would like to put, is: “One glance at a book and you hear the voice of another person, perhaps someone dead for 1,000 years. To read is to voyage through time.” – Carl Sagan. The quotation from Carl Sagan highlights the tremendous experience of reading. According to him, reading a book helps you engage with the author’s ideas and views, giving you the ability to hear the voice of a person who may have lived centuries ago. Reading takes you on a historical voyage that lets you discover the viewpoints and knowledge of those who have gone before you. Hence, this is the power of reading. Now let’s move to the main question: How to inculcate the habit of reading in your life ? Based on my personal experience, i’m sharing you a few tips which will definately do wonder for you, and pique your interest toward reading, if acted upon with dour determination, consistency. First: begin your journey from short stories, novels and self-help books, because these will develop your interest towards reading. Suppose, from the very start, you start picking those thick books, consisting of 500/600 pages, you will feel bored, is unable to complete and abandon reading. Hence, it is a better way to start from short books that consist of 150/170 or around 200 pages. Second: Now when you have completed those short books and your reading habit has developed more ever than before. Now choose the genres the interest you have developed much in: Fiction, non-fiction, historical, political or religious, mystery or science etc. This will pique your interest further and you will see the development emerging soon. Third: Spend at least an hour on a daily basis in the early morning for reading, you will absorb abruptly the things you read in the books in the early morning, and you will feel the taste of book throught the day you read in the morning. On the contrary, if you read tonight, you will hardly read a single page due to sleepy feelings and exhaustion. It is, therefore, vital for beginners to give books a read in the early morning. Fourth: Surround yourself around those people who read alot and have dicussions on logic, arguments and have ability to question and answere. When you are around them, your attention will also draw closer to those things that they do, such as reading, dicussing, debating. Because we are much influenced by the company we keep. In this digitally-enhanced era, follow those people on facebook, insta who writes, reads and have a debate over fruitful things—full of bombardments of logical and rational ideas, thoughts, ideology and philosophy. This will help you to have an astonishing grip over reading habits. Sixth: When you finish a book, start writting review of that book in your own words that what you gained from the book you read. This strategy will help you to build your arguments and develop ideas that you utilize after reading. These tips i have written will definately help you as these helped me in my reading habit.
