I write today with a heavy heart, deeply saddened by the catastrophic flood that has engulfed the city of Derna, Libya, in recent days. What initially began as light rainfall quickly escalated into a torrential downpour, resulting in widespread devastation and unimaginable human suffering. The estimated casualties are staggering, with conflicting reports from various sources, making it clear that this is a disaster of unprecedented proportions. According to the United Nations, approximately 1,000 lives have already been tragically lost, and thousands more are unaccounted for. The Libyan Red Crescent, on the other hand, has reported a much higher figure, with nearly 10,000 people presumed to have perished. The Mayor of Derna has issued a harrowing warning that the death toll may reach a staggering 20,000 if immediate action is not taken. The gravity of this situation has been exacerbated by the breach of two dams outside Derna, unleashing a terrifying wall of water that has inundated the city center, leaving its residents in a state of utter despair. In times of such dire need, it is crucial for the international community to come together and extend support to our fellow human beings facing unimaginable hardship. Pakistan, which has shared historical and Islamic bonds with Libya, must step forward to offer assistance. We acknowledge that Pakistan faces its own financial challenges, but the magnitude of this catastrophe demands a compassionate and humanitarian response. I earnestly implore the Pakistani government to consider deploying skilled personnel and resources to aid the flood-stricken people of Derna in reaching safety. Such an act of solidarity would not only reflect Pakistan’s commitment to the welfare of humanity but also serve as a shining example of the principles of compassion and brotherhood that our nation upholds. In this moment of profound grief and loss, the people of Pakistan extend their heartfelt condolences to the people of Libya. We stand united in spirit with them during this dark chapter in their history, and we are ready to lend a helping hand to alleviate their suffering. Let us not forget that the bonds of humanity are stronger than any adversity. Together, we can make a difference and bring hope to those who have lost so much.
