United Nation was created after the second world war in order to combat and prevent catastrophe in future and give peace a long-lasting Chance. The scope and ambit of UN was wide and it was meant to bring the spirit back, but the reality is at odds of what it seeked. The nascent UN embarked upon certain operations that were marked as productive for the reconstruction of societies. One such operation was the United Nations military observer group (UNMOGIP) Launched in 1948 in order to restrain the military forces of Pakistan and India from fighting and made them obliged to ceasefire. Another such operation was Conducted by the United Nations truce supervision organization (UNTSO) following the Arab-Israel conflict the same year. Despite such concrete and intrusive steps, the UN seems exhausted and defeated to really deter the perceived threat by the small and third world countries from large countries and hegemonic Nations. The checkered history of UN’s failure speaks abhorrence and are shabby in its entirety. From being failed to prevent genocide in Rwanda (1994) to ending up as a failure in Iraq and Afghanistan their lies bewilderment, despair and none the less incompetency. United Nation as an organization has always ended up as pawn in the hands of those at the helm of affairs, cue to the P5 members. The irony is that since its creation, more than 20 Noble peace prizes were bestowed upon either the members of UN or it was awarded to the organization for its Peace building efforts which is synonymous to calling an autocratic ruler the real embodiment of Democracy. The role played by UN in the Ukrainian crisis is a stark depiction of how it has been a silent spectator over the period of time. Although the members at UNGA voted against the Russian invasion of Ukraine but Putin’s Russia vetoed the said resolution justifying the invasion as it was an issue associated with the national security of Russia. The myth of a Peace keeping and building organization has been diminished and it only has now skeletons to keep in the cupboard of History. The United Nations has failed to deal with the crisis of ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, nor did it prove a source of relief for the Syrian inhabitants. It also paid lip service to the war crimes and atrocities committed by the RSS inspired Narendra modi regime in Jammu Kashmir. The United Nations also failed to deal with the refugee crisis. The brokered convention of 1951 to address the plight of refugees is limited to a geographical landscape that is famously known as Europe. According to statistics and data, more than 40 million people are living outside their homeland. The ill treatment of refugees on the hands of States like Iran is not only gut wrenching but also is a deponent of the fact that United Nations no longer is the emissary of human rights protection. It has lost the legitimacy to be branded the plenipotentiary of Peace building, gender equality, and climate change protector. It is an undisputed truth that UN has failed drastically to avert any misfortune and has not exceeded the political will and interest of its member States. Besides the Peace building mantra UN also advocates the cry of education, eradicating poverty, gender equality and uplifting the wretched class as Ban Ki moon the 8th general secretary of UN stated: “If it were not for the United Nations, the international community would not have been able to make significant gains on eradicating extreme poverty, promoting public health, and scaling-up access to education.” Such claims are only show pieces to be held high in theoretical framework and has nothing to do with reality. Jeffrey Sachs in his book, “The End of poverty has given striking remarks and an insightful review about the condition of poverty and education in Africa and Some Asian countries. According to Sachs who comes across the countries in crisis, most of the Asian and African countries are not even near to the climb the first ladder of economic development. However he carves out a way out of the crisis for these downtrodden people of underdeveloped countries using reasonable and rational ground. UN is an organization that serves the interests of its official members and is nothing more than a pantomime
