M. Shahjahan Memon
Carol Bellamy, a former American politician once said “Girl’s education is the single best investment that any society can make”. I believe it is high time to tap the girl’s potential through quality education and skills development in a country like Pakistan where majority of girls are still lagging behind in a number of fields. Aisha Lareb Memon, a blogger and a fourth year medical student at Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University, Larkana, has recently won global undergrad cultural exchange scholarship through her hard work for a six month period and she is studying and representing Pakistan at Southeast Missouri State University, USA. She is said to be the only girl who has won the prestigious scholarship from Qamber district of Sindh. It is undoubtedly a huge achievement for a girl and her relatives belonging from a very conservative and far flung city of Qamber Ali Khan, Sindh. Aisha aspires to uplift other fellow girls in the future and wishes to work in the health sector as a doctor and play her part as a productive citizen. Girl’s like Aisha are like first drops of rain in a desert. There is no denying the fact that education plays a significant role in one’s life and girl’s education is particularly important as it impacts generations. It is high time that government should sensitize people about the value of girl education for the benefit of the nation as a whole as well as there is a need to maximize awareness and incentivize girl education at local and international level. Scholarship programs for girls will encourage girls to get higher education and become skilled member of the society. Investing in human capital is the most precious possession a nation can have and empowering girls is key as no nation can progress by keeping its half of population in darkness. Educating girls can help in the exponential rise in growth and development of a society and nation as a whole. Different sexual orientation should not be a challenge to creativity, ideas and innovation. We must not limit human potential merely on the basis of gender difference. Let’s shun this mentality and be like Aisha.
