The world’s leading ranking agency for corruption- Transparency International released its latest report for the last year on Thursday. With regards to the documents, Transparency takes a scientific look at the perception of corruption in the light of the reports of experts from 13 major institutions in 180 countries around the world. According to the report, Corruption in Pakistan has surged in 2020 and the country’s overall ranking has dropped four places compared to 2019. Meanwhile, The report ranks 180 countries in the world for corruption. Pakistan ranks 124th in the list of most corrupt countries, up from 120 last year. In Pakistan’s neighbouring countries, Afghanistan’s corruption score has improved three places, although it still ranks 165 in the index. Similarly, India, Iran and Nepal have also seen an increase in corruption cases and the corruption score of the three countries has decreased by one notch. India’s corruption score is 40 and ranking in the CPI index is 86. According to the complete index, the lowest corruption in the world was recorded in New Zealand and Denmark and both countries are at number one in the rankings while the highest corruption was recorded in South Sudan and Somalia with a rank of 179. This year’s report says that in the days of the Corona epidemic, it has come to light that corruption is affecting the health system around the world. A previous study by Transparency International found that corruption costs the world’s health sector 500 billion. According to the head of Transparency International’s Pakistan branch, Pakistan’s score has dropped to 31 this year from 32 last year. Remember that a higher score in the index means more corruption, while a higher score means more transparency.
He said that Pakistan has shown confusion in two places as compared to last year, one is the rule of law and the other is democratic diversity.
According to him, the issues that have come to light after the investigation in these two areas were corruption in government officials, including the parliament, the administration and the judiciary. Police and military personnel are involved, ”he said, adding that the government needed to improve those areas.
